The Secret is causing waves in Malaysia

Malaysian newspapers today have featured the Secret - the DVD and book by Rhonda Byrne, giving it a great thumbs up. Local Malaysian personalities gave glowing testimonials about the Secret.

Andrew Sia of The Star
credits the huge success of the book to influential talk show host Oprah Winfrey, who had in the first of two shows dedicated to it this February, Oprah said she has, unknowingly, long lived her own life according to its tenets. Similarly hard-bitten news hound Larry King featured it, twice too, on Larry King Live last December.

True in the country, people in the Real Estate, Insurance, Unit Trust and MLM industries are showing the film to motivate their agents.

The paper quotes local testimonials from people include
Sharmini Hensen (a life coach),

Camelia (Dayang Nor Camelia- Sarawak-born award-winning singer), Mohd Marzuki bin Mohamed (Engineer) and several others.

Simplicity is a hallmark of this inspiring book that offers to teach you how to get what you really want in life.

LAW OF ATTRACTION
By Michael Losier
Publisher: Warner Wellness, 150 pages
(ISBN: 978-0446199742 / 978-0446406185)

I WAS thinking about the hype and the publicity surrounding Rhonda Byrne’s best-selling motivational book, The Secret, and how big it has become.

I was thinking of the reactions people I know have to The Secret and how most wonder if its philosophy, which is based on the “law of attraction”, really works and, if so, how it works. Despite life coach Bob Proctor – one of many who feature in The Secret – exhorting readers not to worry about the how, some “structured-thinking” people still want it to be articulated. To them, the how is missing.

These ruminations were interrupted by a text message from a friend asking if I had heard of Michael Losier and his Law of Attraction: The Science of Attracting More of What You Want and Less of What You Don’t. There I was, thinking about the “how” and a book that could explain exactly that lands in my lap – after all, the blurb on the cover of some editions of this book says “The secret behind The Secret”.

Aha, the law of attraction in action! How could I refuse a request to review this book after that?

To those who know anything about The Secret or about NLP (neuro linguistic programming, an established motivational technique), author Michael Losier needs no introduction. To those who don’t, suffice it to say that he has made a difference in the lives of many people around the world through his motivational teachings.

Losier – a “convert” of New Age gurus Esther and Jerry Hicks and their teachings of Abraham – begins the book with a brief history of the law of attraction. He confirms we all experience the law of attraction, pointing out that this is evident if we think about events in our lives that came about due to what we gave our attention to.

He goes on to elaborate on the science behind it, writing that whatever we focus on will respond to the vibrations we give off when we apply that focus. The law of attraction puts it all into a nutshell, asserting that, “I attract into my life whatever I give my energy, focus and attention to”.

Losier also draws on NLP to point out the significance of words; we use them daily, not only out loud but also to form our thoughts and worldview. Words are obviously powerful, which is why we have to be careful what words we use to articulate our desires, what we want to attract.

He then provides an easy three-step formula on how to use the law of attraction to our advantage:

1. We need to identify our desire clearly.

2. We need to give that desire our full attention.

3. We need to allow the desire to manifest. He makes following the formula simple, too, by creating user-friendly worksheets to get readers focusing and “actioning” thoughts. The worksheets can not only help you to determine what you want more clearly but also instil the habit of focusing on desired thoughts and behaviours that will ensure the manifestation of desires.

There are also 10 tools that teach you how to “allow” the desired reality to manifest, such as expressing appreciation and gratitude and creating a void or vacuum for attracting the desired outcome through the absence of doubt.

Readers who are already familiar with the allowing concept from The Secret will find an excellent review of how to identify limiting beliefs as well as a simple way to change them.

Newbies only recently exposed to the idea of the law of attraction will find easy-to-follow instructions for applying the principle to practical life situations.

And the two case studies used as examples of the exercises deal with the very things that most of us are concerned about: relationships and money.

The last few chapters, which deal with relationships and our vibrations as well as how parents and teachers can teach the law of attraction to children, are a much welcome bonus!

Throughout the whole book, Losier summarises each section, making it easy to digest and review what it teaches.

If I were to sum up the book in one word, it would be “simple”. Life is simple but we insist on making it complicated. Taking that approach, Losier manages to increase his readers’ understanding of the law of attraction by adopting a simple style of writing all the way through.

He divides a complex subject into simpler parts and offers mastery of each part using a thoroughly simple thought process. “Nothing is more simple than greatness; indeed, to be simple is to be great,” said Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Offering as it does a scientific basis for the law of attraction, underlined by a lack of New Age “woo woo” mantras, Losier’s Law of Attraction is a great, inspiring and healing book.
